2019: Week 3 Results – Last (Dallas) Mantooth Standing

Hello Footballers,

I hope you had a good weekend.  The weather is still pretty hot here, so we spent more time napping and watching sports on TV than we did hanging out in the yard…but hopefully soon we’ll see a few days in the 80s.

Overall it was a solid week.  Dallas blew the doors off, and most of the other wins were pretty solid as well.  Only one strike this week, and that went to Violet for picking Tampa Bay, who got outscored some 20+ to 3 in the second half, only to lose by 1.  A heartbreakers for sure.  It also means that I am the last person in the house to not have a strike.  Hopefully I can hang on to that and not do anything stupid.

This week’s Thursday game is a barn burner – Eagles v. Packers.  If you’re gonna go with that game, then I need your pick by kickoff.  Otherwise, you know the drill.  (End of the day on Friday.)

In the meantime, here’s a few snaps of some of the scrum players making the most of their nights under the lights on the football field.  Molly is 5th from the right in the picture of the cheerleading squad from Champaign, Il, Gabe is #28 and Calvin is #8 at their respective football teams out in Florence, CO.  Football does bring people together. Thanks to Molly and Stephanie for sending in the pics.

Be like Molly and Stephanie – send in some pics.

Cheers to all and have a great week!

2019: Week 3 Picks – How ’bout them Cowboys?

Hello Footballers,

While we have six different teams selected here in week three, I am astounded that so many  – half of our players (including all 4 who have a strike) – have picked the Cowboys. Personally, in the 8 years of this pool, I have never picked a Cowboys game correctly, so I’m in total shock that eleven of you felt like this was your best bet. It also means, that I’ll be pulling for the Dolphins.  Err…well, maybe not the Dolphins.

Other than that we’ve got a good week cooking – the Raiders/Vikings and Broncos/Packers also games to watch.  Good luck to everyone.

In the meantime, I’m reminding you what winning looks like. As Dianne pointed out when she sent this great photo: it’s not only the Hergenrothers enjoying a game in South Bend, but also a picture containing not 1, but TWO Nemmers Scrum Winners!  Nice work there.

2019 Week 2 Results: Where did all the QBs go?

Hello Footballers,

Let’s just take a moment to be glad that we run a king of the hill pool here and not fantasy football.  With the injuries (and mono) this week, we saw lots of disruption at the QB position, including in Pittsburgh (season ending elbow injury for Rothlesburger), New Orleans (Brees broke his thumb, out for 6 weeks) and the Jets (I’m not sure who is left after mono and some injuries.)

On our own front, we saw a couple more folks get strikes.  Kevin we already knew about, and Dan takes a hit with the hometown Bengals.  And, everyone who picked the Texans should be pretty excited about their ability to stop the Jags on 4th down at the end of the game’s goal line play, or this week could have been a real blood bath.

This week’s Thursday game is Tennesee v. Jacksonville.  If you are bold enough to go with that game, then I need your pick before kickoff.  Otherwise, let’s get those picks in by end of day on Friday.

And, for pictures this week, I’m posting from a summer event – Whoosie’s 70th b-day shin dig in Des Moines.  It was a ton of fun: seeing family, eating cake, attending the best farmers market in the universe, and of course, achieving my life long dream of seeing the Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile.  Y’all – send more pictures.

2019 Week 2 Picks

Hello Footballers,

I hope you are settling into fall.  I know that several of our crew were witnessing live action college football this weekend, others of us have to settle for TV.  But, I’m excited to have the weekend a little more free this weekend to actually sit and check out some match ups.

This week, the bulk of the pack went with Houston or Baltimore.  Solid choices for sure, but 5 other teams also got into the mix. Sadly for Kevin, his plan-ahead strategy of picking the Thursday game backfired when Carolina couldn’t get it done at the end against the Bucs. So instead of resting easy this Sunday, he’s hoping that a few of us take a strike to suffer along with him!

Good luck to everyone.  Also, a reminder to get me your $$ if you haven’t done so already.

2019 Week 1 Results

Hello Footballers,

I hope everyone enjoyed the first weekend of football.  The nail biter awards go to Bill with his New Orleans pick, where the lead changed twice in the last 40 seconds of the game, and to Molly whose Chargers won in overtime.

That left newcomer Fletcher and perennial frontrunner Stephanie as the only two who suffered a strike at the hands of the Browns.  Perhaps the “new look” Browns don’t quite have new results just yet, but time will tell.

This week’s picks are due on Friday by the end of the day, unless you are going with the Bucs/Panthers game on Thursday evening…in which case you’ll need to get that pick in before kickoff on Thursday.  You can send them to me from here on in.  But, let’s all give a cheer to Kevin who managed to round everything up in week 1!  Thanks, man!

Here’s a couple pictures from this past weekend. It was really cool to have Mary, the Hergenrothers and the Springfield Nemmerses here.  And I’m so thankful to Kevin, Fletcher and Violet for all their help.  (The guy standing next to Lisa is Keith Manoy – he’s the super nice guy who helps me find the right clothes for all events…)

Are you ready for some football?…a Monday night Party?

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers!

The kids have headed back to school….so you know what that means? It’s Football pool time!!! Woo Hoo!!!

I’m definitely late in getting organized, but let me know if you are IN for Scrum 2019!!! First week of the season starts next Thursday night when the Packers play the Bears.

Rules are the same:

1. Pay me $10
2. Pick 1 game’s winner each week of the NFL season. You cannot pick the same team twice in the season.
3. Get your picks in by end of day Friday each week, (unless you want to pick the Thursday game, in which ase you need to have your pick in before kickoff)
4. If your team WINS – you move to the next week.
5. If your team LOSES or TIES then you get a strike. You are eliminated on your second strike.
6. Last person standing takes the pot.

A NEW RULE: If only one person is perfect at the end of the regular season, that person will be the winner – even if there are other people who only have 1 strike and are still alive in the pool.

5. If we have multiple people still alive at the end of the regular season, we’ll go to picking 2 games each weekend during the playoffs to try to speed things up.

I can be paid via paypal or via check.

The first week of the season is Chocolate Festival weekend, so Kevin has graciously agreed to organize the picks the first week. Please send first week picks to Kevin.

Because I am so late in organizing, please send notice if you are playing even if you are slow to add funds. We’ll see most everyone sometime this fall, and so I’ll hit ya up in person.

Bring on the trash talking and sports betting!!!

I miss you all and hope that you participate. And also, activity photos are still highly encouraged!

Cheers,

Emily

2018: Week 14 Results – WE HAVE A WINNER!

Hello Footballers,

In a very unlikely turn of events all 3 players still left in contention lost on Sunday.  The Miami Miracle caused New England’s defeat and the Broncos just forgot to show up.

But, in Gerri’s loss with the Patriots, it was also we week to win as both Stephanie and Kevin were eliminated.

So a big congratulations to Gerri Lefton:  2018 Scrum Champion.  Your money is on it’s way!

Thanks to everyone who played along in 2018, and also for sending along the photos. It sure is fun to get to see what everyone is up to.  And with that, have a very Merry Christmas….we’ll see you in August of 2019!

2018 Week 14 Picks: It’s 2 against 1

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

Somehow, Gerri has not only made it to week 14, but has made it without a single error, and with New England still available as her pick. That’s pretty dang impressive.  We’ll see if Tom Brady can get it done for her today against the Dolphins.

As for Stephanie and Kevin, they’ll both be pulling for a Broncos victory or the whole pool is at its end.

The bonus today are some photos from Whoosie and Mary’s Thanksgiving in Florida.  I forgot to send them last week, but it brightened my day to see their smiling faces, and thought it might brighten yours too…even if it was a week late.

Week 13 Results: At Least I Didn’t Get Fired.

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

Sorry that I am so late getting last week’s results out to you.  It is that time of year where every night has a band concert.  Seriously – the kids performed 3 times this week, and Vi has another performance tomorrow.

But, we’re here now, and I have to say that jerky Aaron Rodgers found a way to let me down. With their loss last Sunday I was eliminated from the pool.  Boo.  Maybe I should talk to his State Farm Agent.  But, keeping things in perspective – all I lost was my chance at pool-victory, I didn’t lose my job like some people.  Kevin thinks Mike McCarthy got fired because the Packers organization got wind that I was eliminated and made McCarthy the fall guy, but I’m not so sure.

Get your picks in for this weekend.  We’re too late for the Thursday game…although Kevin is grumbling about not picking Tennessee when he had the chance.

Good luck to Stephanie, Gerri and Kevin!

2018 Week 13 Picks: Three Against One

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

This week, we’ve got three players pulling for the Seahawks and one (me) pulling for Green Bay.  It’s against my nature to cheer for Aaron Rodgers, but this week I’m gonna do it!

Good luck to Stephanie, Gerri and Kevin!

And, as we put up our tree today – I have to wonder – what football themed ornaments do you have on your Christmas tree?
