How ’bout them Cowboys?

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

There was definitely a bit of nervous tension going into what should have been a no-brainer of a win for Dallas on Monday night.  Kevin knew that a.) no one else had lost yet this weekend and b.) by his own admission back in week 7 that picking the Cowboys is always a dangerous thing to do – even if there is a 10 point spread.

Sadly for 5 members of the pool, Dallas couldn’t get it done.  We now bid farewell to Uncle Bill, Charlie Hergenrother, Dianne, Howie and Kevin.  Howie must be joining Kevin in the smacking-himself-in-the-forehead department, as Mary was just wiped out by these self-same Cowboys back in week 6.  Anyway, thanks for playing y’all.

In other results: my lone pick of KC turned out ok, and I was shocked to see that it was the first time ANYONE picked them all season.  Nuts!  And, Paul must have been saying all kinds of effective prayers Sunday morning to have the Lions squeak that game out over in London.  So, so close.

So we’re half way done and only 8 players remain.  And still Gerri remains the only undefeated.  This week’s Thursday game is the Saints at Panthers.  If that’s your game of choice, I need your pick before kick off.  Otherwise, end of day Friday, please.  Happy Halloween!

Week 8 Picks: Big Bets on Big D

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello footballers,

I have managed to wrestle the controls back from Kevin and am taking a look at this weeks picks.  As the ONLY person who picked KC, I am a little nervous that maybe it was too risky. But then again, Paul has DET all to himself, and that’s saying something too.  Maybe us loners are onto something.  Them Cowboys seem to be the favorite – with 5 of the remaining 13 going for them, and CLE and NE round out the picks.   Well, as Kevin said, worst of luck to all of you.  Go KC!!!!

Week 7 Results – Jags Win?!

Posted on by • 0 comment

The Pats and the Buffalopes survived a couple squeakers. Dallas, Green Bay and Baltimore rolled. Cleveland was once the laughing stock we picked against each week. This year they look respectable… or they did until they lost to the reigning laughing stock, Jacksonville. The Jaguars are looking to turn their season around. I’ve been trying to convince the Sherburnes this wave was coming for weeks now.

Adam got his first strike and Uncle Joel took one too many. He is now eliminated, but on the bright side he can root hard for his wife Gerri who stands alone on top of the standings. Through seven weeks, she is the lone player without a strike.

The latest fancy standings below are sorted by strikes. (I know – pretty intense, right?)

The Scrum Queen returns on Wednesday, so go ahead and fire your picks back to her for week 8. Feel free to take a crazy risk. Worst of luck to everyone!

Sincerely,

the Scrum Czar

Week 7 Picks – A New Scrum Czar Is In Town!

Posted on by • 1 comment

Emily is off road tripping and completely neglecting her responsibilities as Scrum Queen. After minutes of plotting and scheming, I orchestrated a flawless coup and the hostile takeover was complete in just a few hours. Since she’s on the road, she may still be unaware she has been dethroned. However, once she’s sees her desk chair toppled, she’ll know the jig is up.

Upon taking control, I decided to earn the loyalty of my subjects by completely redesigning the pick sheet. It’s bolder and sleek. Information just pops off the screen. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before!! (i.e. it is sorted by pick)

It looks like the Cowboys are the popular pick this week. Being a local, we’re all too jaded and skeptical to ever bet for or against the Cowboys. Too unpredictable for my taste. There are 6 teams to follow. The Pats have already squeaked out their win. And some crazy loner actually took the Bills.

Good luck to everyone! (not really)

Week 6 Results: A tie? Oh My.

Posted on by • 1 comment

Hello Footballers,

Well, this week was full of craziness.  With the Cincy tie and the stunning Cowboys upset in Seattle (So much for the Legion of Boom!), our pool is starting to see some shake-up.  A quick check of the rules page  (Rule #4) clearly states that a tie is not a win, and counts as a strike.  Sadly, this means that Dana H. has been eliminated, and that Howie and Uncle Bill both have a strike.  I’m betting Dana’s Cross country team qualifying for state (woot!) more than made up for it.  Good luck, Dana!

The Cowboys ended the game for Mary, and gave a strike to a few others.  This leaves Adam and Gerri as the only two players without a strike.  Adam and Gerri?  I’m sure the Hergenrothers and Sherburnes have something to say about that.

Looking ahead:  This coming weekend I am going to be out of the reach of the internet (Don’t laugh, Dianne, I’ll be at a sheep and wool festival), and so Kevin has graciously agreed to put together the sheet and post the picks.  That being said, please send picks to him.   Also, the Thursday game is Jets/Pats – so get your pick in before kick off if that’s the one you want to go with.

Good luck to everyone!

Week 6 Picks: Hopefully the results will be better than the picking

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

I don’t know if it was the blood moon, or we’re all just busy, but there were a lot of bumps in getting this picks in this week:  people flipped and flopped, people were busy cheering for siblings who were qualifying for state championships, and some people got back from world traveling and figured they might need a personal invitation now that they’re so fancy schmancy (ahem…Bill…ahem).

But, the picks are all in.  Lots of choices this week, all seem pretty safe.  Which means someone will get a surprise, right?  Well, all the best to everyone anyway.

Week 5 Results: We’re Down a Man

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

I hope you are having a good week.  I have been distracted by some mighty exciting Missouri-based baseball, and lost track of this post.  I also had to wait to the end of the Monday Night Game, which always throws me a bit off.

Enough with the excuses.  This week everyone won except those of us who put our faith in a team that had a horrible kicker.  The Lions let down Joel, Grandpa Bill, and me.  It was the biggest bummer for Grandpa, as he is now eliminated from the pool.  So so sad to see him be eliminated.  More time to focus on the Royals and Mizzou football, I guess.  With the two of us new to the “one strike” club, we’re down to  7 perfect guessers left.  (Too many of them have the last name Hergenrother or Sherburne…let’s get these guys!).

The results are below.    This week’s Thursday game is the Colts and Texans.  If you want to pick either of these teams, I’ll need to know before kick off.  This plan worked pretty good last week for Paul and Stephanie, so don’t discount the Thursday game.  Otherwise, by end of day Friday.

Thanks for your picks!

Week 5 Picks – A little bit of everything

Posted on by • 0 comment

Well Hello Footballers,

Yesterday in Dallas was busy….5Ks and pinantas and lots of fun in between…. Needless to say, there were no football picks being posted.

Six different teams are picked this week – including the Thursday night game.  So Paul and Stephanie can rest easy today while the rest of us sweat it out.  Speaking of resting easy –  I hope Gerri is home and resting easy after her hip surgery. Glad to see that it hasn’t inhibited her ability to make picks!   Wishing you a speedy recovery for sure.

Oh, and there are birthdays – Adam and Dana both had birthdays in the last couple of days, and I turned the big 4-0.  (No offense to mom, but I swear I am a lot younger at 40 then she seemed to when I was 10 and she turned 40…I can only imagine how old my kids must think I am – hah!)

And, if you’re wondering, our daily lives are not really being impacted by the whole Ebola thing.  That hospital is only about 5 miles from us, but really, the reasons that half the city shut down last week was because of terrible storms.  Thankfully, we were also not impacted by that, but lots of our neighbors, and schools are still without power.  But, the Manteeth are good.

Ok, here’s the picks.  Good luck to everyone!
