2020: Week 12 Picks: Thanksgiving Memories For the Win!

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

I hope everyone had their fill of pie this past week. I’m still eating it for breakfast every day and it is glorious. As unusual as this year has been, I am so very thankful for many things, especially hearing from all of you each week during football season.

In addition to celebrating Thanksgiving, we also had some other celebrations this week. Charlie and Judy celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Friday and Jim Mantooth had his big 80 birthday! Yay for big round numbers!

Here are the picks for this week. Fletch is hoping he can steal Dana’s strategy with some bold picks, and Whoosie’s dedication to the Bears are the standout choices. We are definitely running out of weeks where even making a move is possible, so I admire those who are making bold moves.

I am still working on my Thanksgiving group picture, thanks to everyone who sent in a photo or two. In the meantime, here are the list of Thanksgiving memories that people shared. I love that some of these overlapped. I also enjoyed the crazy things we all did as children. Gobble, Gobble, Gobble, Dana!

Charlie N:
Our favorite (and there were many) Thanksgiving was in San Antonio at our 50th wedding anversary. You all served and so many were there. It was super!!

Jim:
My Thanksgiving memory is the first one you (Emily) had with us. My mom (Gran) was all excited about the new addition to the family tree. It was a great day!

My very old memory is back when Suzanne’s and my mom both attended and John hosted. This was before Margie so it was catered. Another great day!

Stephanie:
Favorite memory is not very specific but more of a feeling. Love being inside, cooking with a fire and starting a new puzzle!

Dan M:
Recent memory of Uncle Charlie and Joel doing leg lifts after Thanksgiving dinner and Uncle Charlie won.  I almost threw up watching it.  I had eaten about half of one Aunt Judys pies. My kids still talk about it!

Kid memory my brothers and sisters draped me in a Kroger paper bag and pretended I was a turkey maybe 2/3 years old. They “hunted” me and cooked me under the end table in the living room on one of my Moms cookie sheets.

Kevin:
My Thanksgiving memory goes back about 23 years. Before she was infamous for organizing illicit family football pools and running numbers, Emily (aka The Commish, aka Pie Bird, aka Laser Eyes, aka Emily Knuckles) was just my angelic girlfriend with pretty blue eyes and a big smile. My heart sang as I introduced her to a Mantooth family Thanksgiving gathering. At once I knew she felt right at home. After a wonderful meal the extended family lounged in front of the TV to talk about cherished memories and visions of hopeful futures. During this wondrous discussion, Emily fell asleep on the couch and drooled all over my mom’s favorite throw pillow. Eventually the snoring got so loud, the family had to move to the dining room to play games. Our fun and laughs eventually drowned out the racket in the next room. Emily woke in mild confusion at being left alone on a strange couch and eventually joined us for a game and became part of the family. I am forever thankful that she became a part of my life. A photo from a dramatic reenactment of this event is attached below.

Note: the bit about the snoring may or may not be greatly exaggerated.

(Editor’s note: Ironically, as I am setting up this blog post, I am sitting in this exact spot, wearing this same sweatshirt and am about 30 seconds from a nap.)

Mary:
My old but most recent memory is this Thanksgiving in Fort Collins when we did the FC Turkey Trot. As you can see the other guys decided to have a leisurely breakfast while we earned our turkey, trimmings and plenty of pie.  Didn’t want to leave Howie out so sent him on same day
My way back memory of Thanksgiving is when we had snow already and it was cold and we would stay out of Mom’s hair by ice skating at the park or sledding down 1st street, which would get closed off so we could go from 10th Ave down to 6th Ave.

Adam:
I have a recent and an older Thanksgiving I remember as very special.  When Lisa and I first moved into our first house we had a big Thanksgiving meal with everyone and Lisa and I made all sorts of food including all the traditional items.  I guess I remember it because there were so many of us in such a small house.  We had extra tables and chairs and we were all jammed in but it was really fun to have everyone at “our house”.  We’ve done it here at the house we’re in now, but I think about that first one every year.

I also think of the one in San Antonio for Mom and Dad’s 50th. That was such a cool holiday w/ all the other stuff going on that weekend even the rain didn’t ruin things.  The mass and the dinner after.  The wonderful Thanksgiving meal w/ no one having to cook, and everyone helping with the dishes.  That really was a super special holiday weekend.

Whoosie:
As a child I remember ice skating all afternoon and coming home to a house smelling of turkey. As a grown-up, I have mostly had orphan Thanksgivings sharing the day with friends, my other family. In Minneapolis about 15 co-workers and friends would gather pre-game at my editor’s apartment, reveling until near midnight. In Chicago, I’d usually be with an assorted mix of other celebrants who were far from any other family, each contributing a dish or two. One memorable Thanksgiving I hosted the festivity included about 12 in my condo—table stretched into the living room—with Mary, Howie, a young Stephanie and younger Andy, a couple and their 6-month-old baby and assorted other hungry friends. In Salida, I sometimes cooked for guests (one memorable time the turkey refused to get done and unbeknownst to the guests, who I plied with wine, saw a stint in the microwave!). And other times, I was invited to Kay and Jim’s (my local “family”) as long as I brought dessert and homemade rolls. And through them all—even the ones that found me cooking whatever I wanted just for me–I was very, very thankful to have such constant friends and family!

Paul:
When I was ~6 and we had friends over and my brother John was laughing so hard while eating Thanksgiving dinner that milk started coming out of his nose. Fun for everyone!

Bill:

My favorite (perhaps it is the only specific date-of-Thanksgiving memory thing I remember) is from 1968 during Vietnam, just after Nixon was elected and folks were having visions of increased military action and were not finding much reason for giving any thanks at this particular Thanksgiving. I was in the Army in Heidelberg Germany for Thanksgiving and I sent Mom a recipe I clipped from the US Army Stars & Stripes newspaper (our anti-Vietnam, anti-Nixon, European edition). It called for placing the Thanksgiving Turkey in a pile of vegetables and other things in an appropriate location, and then “cooking” it using a piece of secret military ordinance I had a role in deploying along the West/East German border. Mom let me know that although the recipe did make a particularly festive political statement, she was not inclined to share it with her bridge club girls.

Also, neither Sherry, Duck or I particularly liked turkey or especially, turkey gravy. So we usually had shrimp scampi with peas for holidays like July 4th & Thanksgiving; though we did, like I have heard Alexander Hamilton and Abe Lincoln did, observe the pecan pie part.

Emily:
My recent memory is one of the first years I had Thanksgiving with the Manteeth. Kevin had told me that Jim didn’t like pumpkin pie, and usually when we all get together for Thanksgiving, we also celebrate his birthday.  So I made a pumpkin pie and told him it was for his birthday.  He smiled and tried to be so nice about it but we could all tell he was grossed out. Hahaha!

My kid memory is sitting in the basement at the Senn house with Andy playing some random decathlon / olympics game on their 1980s computer and trying to race the hurdles game by tapping the z and x keys and the space bar. Man, we banged the heck out of that keyboard. Typing this I marvel at the graciousness of the Senn’s to host the 7 Nemmers plus Louise and Grandma and Grandpa to their house for those holidays.  Where in the world did we all sleep? It all just seems like a big party in my memory.

Dianne:
As a 21 century effort, Dianne sent a video. This memory of “A Turkey is a Funny Bird” is well worth the watch.

Thanks everyone for sending these in. I have enjoyed reading all your stories!  Also…GO STEELERS!!!

2020: Week 11 Results, week 12 picks: Shifts at the top of the leaderboard

Posted on by • 0 comment

Happy Thanksgiving Footballers,

I am taking a brief break to step away from pie baking to get this week’s picks out.  I was very much looking forward to tomorrow evening eating a second round of that delicious pie while I watch the Steelers crush the Ravens.  But, alas, COVID has its say, and now the pie will have to come during the Cowboys v. Football Team game. Boo.

Last week saw a few big moves in the leaderboard. Most notably the perfect pickers moved up on the board: Dana continued her climb, Violet pulled ahead of Heidi (we heard about that for days! here in Dallas) and Dan moved up a few stops as well. We also saw Adam and Paul overtake Bill at the top of the leaderboard. Bill keeps telling me how nice the view is from there, so I hope the two of you enjoy it this week.

Well done everyone this past week, as we didn’t have a single zero – which was a significant improvement from week 10.

Week 12 picks are:

Titans v. Colts
Panthers v. Vikings
Bears v. Packers (Sunday Night Game)

This week when you send your picks, please also do the following:

  1.  Send a picture of you so I can make us a virtual Thanksgiving table – it’s the closest we are going to be to all being together.
  2. Send me a favorite Thanksgiving memory that you have – can be new or old or very old.

I’ll go first: My old memory is being on Thanksgiving break my freshman year of college on the Metrolink in St. Louis with Mary, Howie, Stephanie, Dianne and Carrie (Dianne’s friend) chanting “Cherry Pie! Cherry Pie!” after a day visiting the sites of downtown.

My very old happy Thanksgiving memory is when we were kids and were supposed to be helping Mom make the relish tray for a big meal. Instead of putting out the items on the tray, I put all the black olives on my fingertips and then ate them one by one. Yum!

Happy Thanksgiving, and GO STEELERS (even if they have to play on Sunday).

Here’s a picture of the Manteeth on our recent adventure to Pea Ridge National Battlefield.

2020: Week 11 Picks. Mahomes Carries the Weight of the Scrum

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

I hope you are having a great weekend. The Manteeth snuck out of Dallas for a couple of days and have been living it up in Bentonville. If, by living it up you mean walking Civil War battlefields and hoping it’ll stop raining so we can crank up a fire in the back yard fire pit at our rental house. Anyway, it has been nice to look at a different set of 4 walls for a few days. We’re gonna check out the University of Arkansas on the way back.

Although the picks covered all 6 teams this week, the KC v. LV game was heavily tilted toward Mahomes and the Chiefs, with 14 players using this as their Power Pick. (Or as Bill might call it – the Whoop di do pick).  Brave Fletcher is the only LV pick on the board; we’ll see if it pays off.

Here’s a pick of two of our top players. This is from when we were almost all in San Antonio for Charlie and Judy’s 50th – how was that 5 years ago already?  Man, that was a fun time.  We’ll be keeping those fun moments in our hearts this week as we are keeping our gatherings a bit smaller this year.

GO STEELERS!!!!

2020 Week 10 Results: Dana’s Bold Pick Pays Off

Oof Footballers,

That was a rough week. The bottom 14 players got the same total of points as the top 2.  But the bright light of success was Dana power-picking New England over Baltimore, and Dan getting the other 2 games right to both get 4 points.  Well done Dana and Dan!  The other highlight of the week was the Hail Mary pass at the end of the Cardinals game.  I hope you got to see it on the highlights, but if not, here ya go:

And, as if this week wasn’t weird enough, it was capped off by this post, where I have to sadly admit that Bill is now in the lead. I think the votes were rigged, I demand a recount, I want to switch our pool to electoral college votes. I dunno, something to make it so that Bill isn’t winning.

Props to Adam, Margie, and Paul for staying close on his tail.  I hope that you all fail miserably in week 11 so I can catch you.

Here are the games for week 11:

GB v IND
MIA v. DEN
KC v. LV

Grumble all you want about the games.  I am trying to go with teams that we haven’t seen much of yet this year, so be glad I didn’t pick CIN v. WAS or NE v HOU.  Those would have been even closer.

And, as we head into the holiday season, I am going to share a short Hallmark Movie “Christmas for Christmas”  Happy Holidays!  (Oh, and GO STEELERS!!!!)

Scrum 2020, Week 10 Picks: Will Fortune Favor the Bold?

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

I hope you are having a good weekend and looking forward to a day of football.

This week the picks are pretty evenly spread for two games.  But, the Ravens v. Patriots game is another story, with a very heavy slant to not just picks of the Ravens, but the selection of this game as the power pick.  A standout: Dana H. with her Power Pick of New England.  Will fortune favor this bold move? Only Al Michales and Chris Collinsworth will be able to tell.

Other highlights of this week’s pool:

  • Bill calling his power pick the “Lollapoluza”, signed “From the guy at the top.”
  • Dan saying “GO BENGALS” in his email with his picks
  • Margie taking the phone out of John’s hand to talk football when I called down San Antonio for something completely unrelated
  • Dianne making comments about her accidentally large photo last week
  • Molly sending Star-faced emojis when I realized that she and I had the same picks.

These are the reasons I love the pool.

GO STEELERS!!!!  (sorry, Dan.)

2020, Week 9 Results: The Cardinals Didn’t Win

Posted on by • 1 comment

Hello Footballers,

Who would have thought that ALL 3 underdogs would have pulled out victories last week?  Clearly none of us had the courage to make that choice, as no-one got all the picks correct, and ALL OF US got the Dolphins / Cardinals game wrong. That’s pretty amazing and a statistical rarity.

Congrats to Bill and Jim for getting the top scores of the week with 4 points each.  That was especially hard to pull off in Week 9, and you can see that it moved them up nicely in the standings.  And, congrats to Adam, Bill, Margie and Paul for claiming the top to spots overall.  There’s a few (awesome) people on your tails, so choose wisely!

This week, we have a super big spread on the Sunday night game, so I had to make the other two games super tough ones so that it kept the week interesting. I added the Monday night game because somehow the Vikings and Bears play a different game when they play each other. And, the Monday night games have been surprisingly tough to call the last few weeks.

Week 10 Games:

Seahawks v. Rams
Ravens v. Patriots (Sunday Night)
Vikings v. Bears (Monday Night)

I hope you are all staying safe out there.  We are fine here in Dallas. The numbers are rising, but we continue to be vigilant and wash our hands a lot. It is weird when I see the maps and so many other places are not looking good. I wonder if it is like here, where it is bad, but because we are careful we don’t feel at risk, or if you are more concerned than that.  Know that your safety and health are in our thoughts.

And, here’s a picture of Paul and Dianne. We hadn’t seen their smiling faces yet this year on the scrum, and Dianne confirmed this might be the only picture of them from 2020. I imagine they were smiling like this at the end of the Clemson / ND game last Saturday.

GO STEELERS (get well quick, Ben!)

Scrum 2020 Week 9 Picks: The Cardinals Better Win

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

Can we have a moment of silence for the Miami Dolphins?  Not a single person in the pool had faith that they could overcome a 3 point spread to beat the Cardinals.  This is the first time in our 8 weeks of picking that we had a game we all agreed on.  Let’s hope the Cardinals take care of us all.

The top few spots are tight, with lots of similar picks, so it’ll be interesting to see who shakes out on top.  Personally, I’m hoping Drew Brees pulls one out for the Saints.  But, we’ll just have to wait and see how it goes.

Today’s picture was sent from Charlie N – if you look close between those pretty red bushes, you can see the spokesmodel, Judy Nemmers, looking good in the fall sunshine. The leaves are really getting pretty in Dallas too….I hope that wherever you are, you have a little bit of time to go outside and appreciate all the amazing fall colors.

Good luck to everyone today and GO STEELERS!!!!!

Emily

2020 Week 7 Results: Only One Perfect Guesser

Posted on by • 1 comment

Hello Footballers,

As I have been watching all the election polls this week, I can’t help but wonder how those guys with the big brains and lots of stats would be doing in our football pool.  I’m fairly confident they wouldn’t be doing much better than any of us. But you know who did do better than all of us? Whoosie. She’s the only one who got a perfect score last week with her bold pick of Vegas to go with the wins in Indy and Philly.  Nice Work Whoosie!!!!

The leaderboard has shifted again, and I’d like to point out the excellent positioning of one of our younger players, as Heidi has somehow snuck into the 4th spot, only 2 points off the lead.  Be careful, Heidi, or Uncle Bill will start with his trash talk.

This week we’ve got some “easier” games in the lineup.  Bigger spreads, but some teams we haven’t picked yet, or at least not in awhile.  Hopefully that’ll keep it fun.  I really wanted to pick the Dallas v. Pittsburgh game so Jim would have to pick the Steelers, but I thought that might not be the best idea for the pool…so you’re welcome, Jim, you’re welcome.  : – )

The picks for week 9 are:

Dolphins v. Cardinals
Raiders v. Chargers (in my head this is an Oakland v. San Diego game)
Saints v. Bucs  (the battle for most career touchdowns just got personal)

As we hit the half way point of the season, I am officially letting y’all know this is the last week for reminders to send in your picks. 8 weeks of practice you should have it in your routine by now.  Set yourself a reminder if you need to, but get those picks in, please.

This week’s picture is of Mary and Whoosie who are getting together for a visit this week. I wish I could be there too!

Good luck to everyone….and GO STEELERS!  (I know that’s getting annoying, but it seems to be working so I don’t want to jinx their success.)

2020: Week 8 Picks: Evil, though still fairly lovable

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

I hope everyone at least had a piece or two of halloween candy yesterday.  For me it was some Skittles and a mini Snickers bar.  But, the calendar page has flipped and we hit the middle stretch of the season.  It will be fun to see if the Steelers can continue their dominance, if the Cardinals can sneak their way deep into the playoffs, and what will happen to teams like the Rams, Browns, and Bucs who seem to have so much promise.

What I do know for sure is that picking the games with small spreads and confusing injury reports is keeping our scrum on its toes.  I had some very supportive comments this week, but also had a someone ( *cough cough* Bill *cough cough*) call me “Evil though still fairly lovable.” I think that is my favorite comment so far this year. I am considering having a t-shirt made.

Here are this week’s picks. While we had a lot in common, we still managed to have all six teams selected, although no power picks for Vegas or Dallas, and picks heavily leaning toward their competition in both those games.

This week’s post is a contrast in weather.  I am typing this up from my car while Violet has swim practice outdoors, and Stephanie is shoveling out from 18″ of snow this week in CO. If you look you can see Stephanie’s view of Pike’s Peak. Weather is weird.  Be safe out there everyone!

Go STEELERS!!!!
