2017: Week 4 Picks

Hello Footballers,

Each week, I try to make my pick before I get Paul’s email with his in my inbox on Tuesday, so that I don’t know what everyone is picking when I make my pick.  This week, I am the ONLY person who picked Kansas City, which if anything proves that I am not going with the pack.  This week, that makes me very nervous.  Go Chiefs!

Howie, Charlie N., Stephanie and Jim can all rest easy with their Green Bay pick, as the Packers made quick work of da Bears on Thursday.  For everyone else it’s Seattle  or Atlanta….except Paul’s pick of Dallas(!) and Tyler going with the Pats.

Good luck to everyone, but I have to say I am kinda hoping the legion of boom goes…boom!

2017: Week 3 Results….so close to total annihilation

Hello Footballers,

Does anyone have fingernails left?  4 of the 7 games in the mix this week came down to the last drive or overtime.  By now, we should know that Tom Brady is NEVER out of a game…but who saw a 61 yard field goal coming from Philly?  Not me!  Ending those games just a few minutes earlier and EVERYONE would have sustained a hit!

With Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Miami and Denver all sustaining losses, we had 7 people take a strike this week.  Sadly, it was the second strike for Chad and Sam.  So sorry to see them both go.

This week we have a couple of pictures to share:  Dana H. heading off to homecoming looking amazing, and the crew that walked the NAMI walk in Minneapolis for Andy.  Bill, Mary and Howie are all pictured (and Uncle John Mageli too: hi John!) So glad they could all get out there and support such an important cause.

The Thursday game this week is Bears v. Packers.  A lot of you have used up Green Bay already – but not so much Da Bears….so make sure to get that pick in before kick off on Thursday.  Otherwise before end of day on Friday.

Thanks! Have a great week.  For those who were worried (ahem, Mary) the Honors page has been updated as well….

2017: Week 3 Picks

Hello Footballers,

We’ve got 7 different teams up for grabs this week, with the majority of picks going toward Green Bay and Philly.  Will Green Bay rally with all their injuries?  Will the Giants remember they play professional football during a game with a division rival and take down the Eagles? Who knows…that’s why we play the games.

Good luck to everyone.

Also…pay up!  It’s 3 weeks in. If you haven’t paid soon, I’m gonna send out my Midwest Goon Squad to come t.p. your yard.  (I’ve got people everywhere…hah!)

2017: Week 2 Results

Hello Footballers,

The week wrapped up with only 1 strike – and that goes to Chad…who put faith in the Cowboys over his hometown Broncos. With lightening delays, it sure was a weird one, but the Cowboys just didn’t come through and Chad took a strike.

Our pick of the week goes to Whoosie and Stephanie for going with Arizona….picking them on the road in week 2 was risky.  We’d love to see a show of fingernails, to see if any were left once it went to overtime.  But, both players remain unscathed, and now have all the big guns still in their arsenals.

Kevin and I may have picked Oakland, but really we picked the STEELERS!!!!! as we went to Pittsburgh for the game to celebrate Kevin’s birthday. It was a lot of fun…they did a tribute to Dan Rooney before the game and some of the old greats were there – Mean Joe Greene, Franco Harris, Brett Keisel and his impressive beard…so cool.

The week 3 Thursday night game is LA Rams vs. 49ers.  Make sure to get your pick in before kick off if that’s the way you’re going to go.  Otherwise, please get those picks in before end of day Friday.

And, I’m kinda liking sharing photos, so this post we’ve got one of Kevin and Emily at Heinz field, and one of Stephanie Carter hoisting her medal from a 13K race this past weekend.  Clearly, she doesn’t just crush football pools, she crushes high altitude races as well.  Way to go, Stephanie!!!!  (If you have a photo to share, please text it with your picks, otherwise I may have to stalk you on social media).

2017: Week Two Picks

Hello Footballers,

Thanks to everyone for getting their picks in on time!  With all those big ol’ spreads, it seems like it should have been an easy week. But, that’s why they play the games.  Let’s see which surprise upset upends our pool.

(A friendly reminder, if you haven’t paid yet, please send your $10 to 4025 Alta Vista, Dallas TX 75229 or text me if you want to use an online payment system).

And, because we’re all here – let’s give a shout to Charlie Nemmers who became a distinguished Honorary Alumni of Mizzou last weekend.  Here’s a great picture of Dad getting his award. This is a rare distinction that has only gone to non-graduates a very few times in the history of the award.  So exciting, and we’re all really proud.  Way to go Dad!!!

Week 1 Results: Kickoff the Season!

The football pool season got off to a relatively smooth start this weekend, with only a few surprises. Paul and Kevin were knocked quickly by trusting the Super Bowl champs on Thursday. Equally surprising was the collapse of Cincinnati and the rise of Jacksonville to knock off the Texans. Paul, Dan, Sam, and I all took our first strike. It’s a tough way to kick off the season!

The (proxy) Commissioner’s Pick of the Week goes to Gabe who believed in the Rams (4-12 last season) and watched them win by 37 Sunday.

Week 2 usually offers its share of surprises before the teams settle in and we figure out who’s who this season. The commissioner is back on duty, so please send your picks to Emily prior to Friday evening. If you’re picking the Thursday game, please send at least an hour before kickoff.

And how is our commissioner? She pulled out another successful 3-days of chocolate with the Dallas Chocolate Festival. Here are some photos from the festival. These are taken by friends and the Dallas Observer.

Week 1 Picks Are In!

It’s a been an extremely busy weekend with the Dallas Chocolate Festival in full swing. Hopefully the commissioner can come up for air soon.

We have 23 participants this season. Thanks to everyone for getting their picks in on Friday night. My goal was to get this shared before my chocolate work shift on Saturday, but I couldnâ’t quite get it pulled together in time. A lot of players have high confidence in the Buffalo Bills to carry them through the dreaded Week 1 this year. Or rather, they have high confidence in the Jets to stink in their opening weekend. A couple of us outsmarted the rest of the pool and played it safe to start the season. Paul and I went for the sure thing and burned the valuable New England pick to ensure there would be no surprises. Unfortunately, some times even the greatest plans by the greatest minds can be crushed by the football gods.

The picks are attached below.

As your bonus, see the attached cake for the chocolate festival. This one was created special for the NBC Sunday Night Football crew as they made the rounds on Friday night. Look for it during one of the commercial break transitions tonight!

cheers!

Kevin

Are You Ready? No, really, ’cause it starts in a week!

HEEELLLLOOOOOO FOOTBALLERS!

I hope everyone is well and ready to get rolling on the football pool.  I know I am.  The season starts next week, so no more pre-season sending in the “B” team.  The football pool is about to get real, yo.  Listen up and let’s get this party started:

Shoot me back a quick note and let me know if you are in for the season.  (And take a quick look through the send list here, if I am missing your favorite relative, please forward this email!)

At some point, send me $10 per player.   Send payment to my address. (Or you can Venmo me if you know what that means)

The first week is a pretty busy week for me (the Chocolate Festival!) – so please send week 1 picks to Kevin.

The rules are pretty much the same as last year, except that if the season starts to go really long….I don’t want to be scrambling in the playoffs again this year, so if it goes past week 13 we’re gonna make it a little harder for the remaining contestants.

The Rules:

1. Send me $10. Your credit is no good here, so ante up!

2. Each week send Emily your pick. Send it only to her, not the whole group, so that everyone can make their own pick. Email her or send a text. (except week 1 send to Kevin)

3. If you team wins, you advance. If your team does not win, you get a strike. On your second strike, you are eliminated. You can only pick any team once each season. This is self-policing. If you accidentally submit a team you’ve already used, catch the commissioner before kick-off to reconcile! Ties count as a loss.

The football season starts on Thursday September 7. If you want that game, then you need your pick in before kick off. Otherwise, end of day Friday. Here’s a link to the Week 1 Schedule.

And, here’s a link to the blog: where you can check out the rules and all. Bookmark the  Nemmers Scrum page so you can check each week’s announcements.

Not fired up, yet? Just think of all the smack you’ll be able to talk…of all the news articles about you’ll read about tactics that you might not understand and players that you have never heard of.  Or, just think of how good it will feel to beat Charlie Nemmers one more year!  Hah!

Get those confirmations in so I can build the spreadsheet, and then we’ll see you for some picks in week 1!

Yay for football and family!

Emily
