Week 6 Results – Be Careful What you Wish For

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

Well, it was a bit of a rough weekend.  With the Steelers surprise loss to the Dolphins we say goodbye to Molly Hergenrother and Team Sherburne.  So sad to see at least one of them go. The loss also gave Tyler and Charlie Nemmers a strike. Adding in Kevin’s loss from Thursday, we’re down to 7 players with no strikes…and the picks keep getting tougher.

As Kevin and I were watching the Steelers game on Sunday, he said, “The pool needs to be shaken up a bit, somebody better lose this week.”  And, just like the the Steelers forgot to show up.  Just a reminder, you better be careful what you wish for.

In the meantime, I’ll be sitting back with my fingers crossed that the Indians can finish off the Blue Jays, that the Cubs rebound, and that the Dallas Cowboys Controversy just keeps chugging along.  Big D sure does love a good quarterback controversy….

This week’s Thursday night game is da Bears vs. the Packers.  Get your pick in before kickoff if you want in on that action. Otherwise, before the end of the day Friday, please.

Have a great week everyone!

Week 6 Picks: Only 3 games matter

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

This week’s picks come down to only 3 games:  Steelers/Dolphins, Titans/Browns, Bills/49ers.  So, by 4:00 on Sunday, we should know where we all stand.  Only one person didn’t pick one of these 3 games, and that was Kevin.  Trying to plan ahead, he went with Denver on Thursday, and that didn’t work out for him.  So, that leaves us with 11 players that don’t have a strike.

But who are we kidding?  Is anyone watching football?  This week is all about the Cubs.  I know somewhere, Grandpa Bill is smiling.

Week 5 Results: Everybody Gets a Win

Hello Footballers,

You get a win!  You get a win!  Every-body-gets-a-win!

Well, it wasn’t even close.  Everybody won, and there weren’t even any that came down to the wire.

This week, things won’t be quite as easy, as the good teams might not be as good as you thought they were, and a lot of people have used up a lot of their easy pics.

Picks are due on Friday, unless you are going with the Broncos or Chargers on Thursday night…in which case I’ll need your pick before kickoff.

Y’all have a good week.  I’m ready to get over my sorrows of the Rangers early playoff demise by eating a corn dog and saying Howdy to Big Tex at the great State Fair of Texas.

Week 5: Only 4 Games Matter

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

It’s week 5, and people are starting to figure out who are safe bets and who are risky choices.  But, it’s early enough in the season, that everyone still has at least a couple “safe” bets to choose from.  This week, the crew is evenly divided between Green Bay, Minnesota, New England (welcome back, Tom) and the Steelers.   It’ll be interesting to see how things work out from here.

And, if the Rangers keep going the way they are going, I’ll be fully plugged into football by next weekend (but don’t worry, Whoosie – the Cubs are my back up!)

Have a great week!

Week 4 Results: No fun getting old

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

So, turning older – the big 5-0 – didn’t make Adam any wiser.  With the unfortunate performance of Arizona against the Rams, he is our first casualty of the pool.  But, as a  good sport, he said he wanted to stick around and see how things turn out.  Please talk some trash here and again, so that he has something fun to keep him involved.

For those keeping score – still 12 people without a strike.  Interesting.

Get your picks in for this week by the end of the day on Friday, unless of course you are picking the Thursday night game between Arizona and San Francisco.  (In this house, that will be known as the stupid game that was played at night while the Rangers had a 3:00 start).

Thanks for playing!  Go Rangers!!!!

Week 4 Picks: The advantage of picking early

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello Footballers,

I hope everyone is having a good weekend.  A lot of you are breathing easy, as a Cincinnati win over Miami on Thursday night meant a worry free weekend for Gerri, Howie, Paul, Sam, Kevin and Team Sherburne.   The rest of us are just gonna have to wait and see what happens with the Redskins or the Cardinals.  And, well, for some reason Bill picked the Vikings.  We’ll see what happens there.

Also, just in case you felt like texting your loves ones on Monday – we have some milestone birthdays this week. Adam will hit the half-century mark. (I know, I thought he passed it a few years back, too), and Dana will be ready to take to the roads of Champaign as she turns the big ol’ 16.  Happy birthday to you both!

Happy Football watching all!

Week 3 Results: The Kicker that almost changed everything

Hello Footballers!

I hope everyone is having a good week.  It could have been a lot worse for 11 of us if Miami didn’t get so lucky.  Man, when are we all gonna learn about 9 point spreads on an 0-2 team?  Risky, risky, business.

Almost everyone survived the week.  Sadly, the Bengals let down Uncle Joel and there’s a surprisingly early chink in the armor of Team Sherburne that came with the Giants’s loss.

So, we’ve not got 8 people with strikes, but everyone’s still in it.  As a group, we are definitely getting better at this game.

This week, get your picks in by the end of the day on Friday, unless you are picking the Thursday night Dolphins/Bengals match up, in which case you need your pick in by kick off tomorrow (and you can’t have already used the Dolphins.)   You actually will have until Saturday morning, as we’ll be too busy eating birthday cake around here to get the picks posted Friday night.

And, one last tiny thing.  There was one more little TV spot from the chocolate festival, and Kevin said I should share it, so here’s the link.  It will serve as a reminder that the event was a success, and that I should take more care with my eye makeup if I am going to be on film next to a former Miss America.  https://youtu.be/UBeUfY8yxAg

Happy Football, Everyone!

2016 Week 3 Picks: Birds and Fish

Hello Footballers,

I hope you are all having a good week! The Rangers made the playoffs, so this whole football thing is gonna remain secondary for me for at least a few more weeks. (Go Rangers!).

Attached are this week’s picks.  Lots of picks for Seahawks and Dolphins (Birds and Fish).  Y’all know that Seattle was shut out last week – as in scored a goose egg?

And, clearly the jinx of picking wrong in Cowboys games only extends to me – as Bill, Charlie H., Stephanie and Jim all picked Dallas to beat Chicago.

Should be a good week.  Have fun watching and we’ll get the results posted shortly.  (ps: If you haven’t paid yet, NOW would be a good time to do so.)

Week 2 Results, 2016

Hello Footballers,

Emily here – I’m back! Thanks to Kevin and all his hard work to get this up and running while I played with chocolate.

It’s all good, except that I made a pretty boneheaded pick of Seattle and have a strike against me.  The Titans win over Detroit also puts a strike on Adam, Celia and Sam.  And, Heidi took a hit as well.  But, all and all, a pretty clean week.

Ok, so get your picks in for week 3 by end of day Friday, unless you want to pick the Texans/Patriots game from Thursday night.  In which case I’ll need it before kick off. If you haven’t paid up, now would be a good time to do so.  If you’re wondering, I made sure Kevin put his $10 in the cup.

Also, if you are having a hard time figuring out who to cheer for this year, I found an interesting article by the math-heads over at Five-Thirty-Eight who were looking for a new team after being betrayed by the Rams’ move to LA.  You can read it here.

2016 Week 2 Picks: Riding Out the Storm

The first two weeks of the season are always the worst. We learn the hard way that bad teams will actually be good this year and the favorites are sometimes the worst.

Last season, 3 people got strikes in week 1 and 20 in week 2 – including 2 eliminations. Two years ago, we had 8 strikes in week 1 and 8 more in week 2 – including 4 eliminations. Of course, this year we’re all smarter and wiser and we’ll all skate through the weekend, right? Sure.

This week there 7 games to watch. Carolina is the popular choice followed closely by Arizona and Baltimore.

Have you paid up yet? Hugs to the half of you that said “yes.” To the rest of you dead beats, get on it. If we don’t receive your ante this week, I’m sending the hired goons to shake it out of each you – with interest.
