Scrum 2024 Week 14 Results

The road continued on with a wacky week 14. The 49ers and Seahawks took care of business early and convincingly. However, the Cowboys-Bengals displayed all the glory of two talented yet frustratingly flawed teams. It looked like the Cowboys would take the game with a successfully blocked punt… until they turned it over during an ill-advised scramble for the loose football. Then Joe Burrow responded quickly and put the game away. What a way to end. It was almost like watching a Chiefs game!

Two perfect pickers prevailed. Our oldest and youngest (at heart) players, Bill and Emily, led the way. Quite a few fours followed as well.

In the overall standings, Mary continues to hold on by a thread. John keeps hanging with her but still hasn’t got over the hump. Down in the middle, Emily voiced her displeasure around the house in Dallas; she’s scored 14 points the past three weeks and still can’t catch anyone in the standings!

I say it’s better to be treading water than sinking.

Here are the week 15 games. Once again, it was slim pickings to find competitive and interesting games. But away we go!

  • Dolphins @ Texans
  • Bills @ Lions
  • Packers @ Seahawks

We have four weeks left in the season. That’s enough time for the people at the top to make some final surges, but not a lot for the rest of us. I choose to focus on the small battles within the standings. Can you catch those in your immediate family? Or catch the kids who don’t even watch sports? Or overtake your crazy uncle?

So finally with that in mind, our Christmas tree offers a hug and thumbs up for anyone who needs extra motivation to finish strong.

Picks are due Friday. Peace!

I’m very late getting these out.  We have a scattering of power picks with heavy emphasis on the 49ers and Bengals. It appears the Bengals-Cowboys game has the biggest split.
We’ll see what happens Sunday!

Scrum 2024 Week 13 Results

Hello and welcome back! It was another wild weekend of football. Our beloved Steelers outlasted the Bengals in a shootout in Cincinnati. The Chargers clobbered the Falcons. The Eagles flexed their muscles against the Ravens.

It was a kind week for some as there were 8 perfect pickers! Somehow, I was not one of them and only earned two points. This thing must be rigged!

Mary finally stumbled this week and missed her power pick. Meanwhile, John and Stephanie had perfect weeks to make up some ground. Suddenly, we have a race at the top!

I cracked the top ten once a while back. I’m not sure what happened to cause my free fall. Rigged!

My strategy for picking games each week is to find games between winning teams with low point spreads. Bonus if we can avoid teams that we chose the week before. This weekend is a commissioner’s nightmare as there are no anticipated close games with point spreads under 3 and the only appealing game of the week is on Thursday.

So I had to reach a bit. We have a battle of for the lead of the disappointing NFC West, which is almost interesting. And then we have a battle between supposed talented teams with losing tendencies. Here are the week 14 games:

  • SEA @ AZ
  • CHI @ SF
  • CIN @ DAL

You know the drill. Picks are due Friday!

And finally, thanks to everyone for sharing their holiday pictures. I think I have found some with most of our football pool members included. Let’s take a tour around the country!

From Colorado, we have Stephanie with Chad and her son Calvin.

From Milwaukee, we have the Lillegard family!

Also in Milwaukee, we have Whoosie and Bill!

Escaping Milwaukee for the weekend, we have Mary in scenic Philadelphia!

From Champaign Illinois visiting Akron Ohio, we have the Hergenrothers!

From sunny Cincinnati, we have Dan working the kitchen!

The biggest gathering of Nemmers was in Springfield Missouri!

And finally, way down in sunny Dallas Texas we have the Sherburnes and the Manteeth!

What a great series of photos with a wonderful group of big-hearted and good looking people!

cheers!

Scrum 2024 Week 13 Picks

Happy Thanksgiving weekend to all the scrummers! I hope everyone found some good food and company the past few days. Now it is time to reset and have a quiet Sunday full of naps and football. Or at least that’s the agenda in Dallas.

The game of the week this weekend appears to be Eagles-Ravens. We had a pretty even split of picks on that game including 6 power picks for the Ravens and 3 for the Eagles. That should be fun! Beyond that, the Chargers and Steelers got most of the remaining power picks with a couple lone rebels pulling for the Bengals and Falcons. Considering the Bengals are 3-point favorites, I thought they might get a little more love this week. But there weren’t many true believers outside of Cincinnati. Perhaps three seasons of Steelers brainwashing is finally working on this crew.

Thanks everyone for sending in pictures this week. I have more than I can handle. I will spend some extra time this weekend getting them all uploaded and include a very large photo gallery in the next post. Until then… Go Steelers!!

Scrum 2024 Week 12 Results

Welcome back Scrumbies! Another fun weekend of football is in the books. The scrum games were not as close this week. I think if someone had told us all that San Francisco would be missing its QB, everyone would have picked the Packers as their power pick. I know I would have just moved on to select a different game for the pool! But that’s where a bit of luck or some extra research comes in to help. And then there are the unfortunate ones who picked the Cardinals as a power pick instead. Oof!

Six people walked away unscathed with perfect scores this week along with seven others with 4-points. That’s a strong week! But on the flip side, nine people were hit with two or fewer points. Ouch! I am included in that latter group. Double ouch!

Mary took her perfect week to pull away from the pack even further. I don’t know what she’s been sprinkling into her tea, but she is making a lot of sharp picks this season!

Here are the games for Thanksgiving weekend. With four games happening before Sunday, the selection of competitive games was small. I apologize for featuring some overly familiar teams again.

  • Steelers @ Bengals
  • Chargers @ Falcons
  • Eagles @ Ravens

I assume there will be a lot of travel this weekend, so take extra care to make picks before you head out or set some reminders to do it after you recover from your turkey coma. Picks are due Friday night.

Also, the blog has been a little stale without many pictures these past few weeks. Please share any family get-togethers and holiday feasts. We’d all like to see what you are doing!

cheers!

Scrum 2024 Week 12 Picks

Here we go! We have three battles this week.

  • In the battle of the birds, we have an even split of picks between the Cardinals and Seahawks with two brave souls going all in with Arizona.
  • In the battle of the bros, most of the picks went to John’s Ravens with just a handful going for Jim’s Chargers. The power picks were split 6-2 in this game.
  • Finally, in the battle of the ‘ers, we got a lot of power pick attention with 8 people going all in with the Packers and 5 for the 49ers. Overall, the crowd leans to Green Bay for this one.

We will see how it all shakes out. Hopefully we have some good games and a surprise or two. It should be fun!

Week 2024 Week 11 Results

Welcome back, Scrumketeers! I hope you got to watch a little football on Sunday. There were some exciting games. The most inspiring was the Steelers flexing their black & yellow muscles against the evil Ravens. But there were also some good games for the scrum as well. In Los Angeles, the Bengals went full Bungle in the first half, but pulled it together in the second half to make a game of it. The game came down to the wire, but the Chargers held them off in the end. The Bills and Chiefs had a great game, but in the end the Bill flexed and broke away. In Denver it was never a contest… the Broncos scored early and often and pummeled the Falcons.

We had a good variety of picks this week and consequently a good spread of results. Mary was the lone perfect picker, but five others had a nice 4-point week. Congrats to Mary, Violet and a handful of old men!

Overall, the standings remain boring at the top. Mary pulled away even further with her perfect week. Will she ever stumble? Adam and John are working hard to keep her in their sights. But even more important, I cracked the top ten! Yes, I am just as excited as you are. Let’s see if I can hang onto it for one week.

Those games were fun for the pool. Can we follow it up in week 12? Maybe. It was slim pickings. Here are the next set of games:

  • 49ers @ Packers
  • Cardinals @ Seahawks
  • Ravens @ Chargers

You know the drill – picks due Friday!

Scrum 2024 Week 11 Picks

hello everyone! This week looks way more fun and interesting with a nice spread of picks. We have a pretty even split between the Chiefs and Bills for picks and power picks. Likewise for the Bengals-Chargers. The Falcons-Broncos game has a pretty good split of picks, but nobody is doubling-down with the Falcons. All those power picks lie with the Broncos.

On paper, these seem like they should be fun games to watch and hopefully will shake up the pool standings a bit. It should be a fun Sunday!

Go Steelers!

Scrum 2024 Week 10 Results

Hello everyone! I feared a boring week with so many people going all in for the Lions. Even though I was one of them, I was kind of cheering for the Texans to invoke a little scrum chaos. But a 52-yard walk-off field goal restored order and put the Lions on top. Oh well, no chaos but I at least got to join five others with a perfect score this week. The perfect pickers this week included Stephanie, Dianne and the entire Mantooth household. Hooray for us!

There were lots of other good scores this week too. Except poor Dana who got a taste of bad karma picking against the beloved and cherished Steelers. It was a hard life lesson, but I am sure she will grow stronger because of it and have better judgment next time!

Not much changed in the overall standings. Mary still leads the way with Gerri one step back. However, we did the gaps close with John and Adam closing in fast.

Here are the games for week 11. Hopefully we have a bit more variety in picks this week!

  • Falcons @ Broncos
  • Chiefs @ Bills
  • Bengals @ Chargers

Picks are due Friday. Have a good week!

cheers
