Week 1 Picks

Posted on by • 0 comment

Here are your picks for week 1.

John snuck in early with a Thursday Eagles victory and will relax Sunday. The other teams to watch this weekend are the Broncos, Patriots, Commanders, Cardinals, 49ers and the beloved Steelers.

Good luck everyone!

(not really, just good luck to those who picked Washington)

Scrum week 1 – here we go!

Posted on by • 0 comment

Welcome back everyone!

This year we have 20 players including a warm welcome for Gerri’s fiancee Jim.

The first game kicks off on Thursday night! I need one pick from each of you. Tell me one team you think will win. Remember – this will be the only time you can pick that team all season. How hard could that be? ha.

If you need a refresher on the rules, you can read last week’s email or check the blog here:http://scrum.manteeth.com/2025/08/nemmers-scrum-2025-whos-in/

I need all picks submitted by midnight Friday. If you want to pick the Thursday game winner, send me your pick before kickoff. You can email or text me your pick

What did you do this summer? This is also a callout for your fun summer pics. Send me a couple to share!

If I forgot anyone or if there are any late additions to the pool, let me know

cheers!

Nemmers Scrum 2025 – Who’s In?

Posted on by • 1 comment

Can you see the changes in the air? A new season is upon us. The leaves will turn, the wind will blow, and the charging anthems of NFL Films begin to play in the background.  Well actually, the last part is true but it’s still hot as blazes in Texas so I can’t speak to anything else in the air.

Scrum is back! We are mixing up the rules this year by rolling back the clock. After a 5 year dance with the 3-team format, we are reverting back to the old days. From 2011-2019 we played a King of the Hill (Survivor) pool and return again for 2025.

The Rules:

  1. Pay up $10
  2. Pick 1 winning team each week of the NFL season. You cannot pick the same team twice in the season.
  3. If your team WINS – you move to the next week.
  4. If your team LOSES or TIES then you get a strike. You are eliminated on your second strike.
  5. Last person standing takes the pot.
  6. NEW Each player gets one Bye Week. You can sit out one week with no penalty. Use it when you’re busy or for strategy
  7. If we have multiple people still alive at the end of week 12, we’ll go to picking 2 games each weekend to speed things up.
  8. If only one person is perfect at the end of the regular season, that person will be the winner – even if there are other people who only have 1 strike and are still alive in the pool.
  9. Get your picks in by end of day Friday each week, (unless you want to pick the Thursday game, in which case you need to have your pick in before kickoff)

The football season starts next week on Thursday September 4.

Interested? Send me an email or text to get you on the list and then shoot me a crisp Hamilton ($10) or beam it via the interwebs using PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle. We’re good at accepting money so we’ll take whatever method you choose.

I included a long list of family in this email, but I don’t have email addresses for everyone. If someone in your household wants to play, they’re invited.

So… are you in? Reply back if you want to be included.

cheers

Scrum 2024 Final Results

Posted on by • 2 comments

We made it! We all survived 18 weeks of football picking chaos. Or rather most of you survived, while I floundered at the end.

There were no perfect players to round out the final week, but several people showed strong four-point finishes. There were a couple of perfect losers though as Fletcher and I rolled out a couple goose eggs to cap off the season.

And yes, to nobody’s surprise we have our season winner! Congratulations to Mary for dominating much of the season and finishing in convincing fashion. It’s time for her to dream about how she’s going to spend her scrum fortunes.

In the smaller races, congratulations to Charlie H, John, Calvin and Emily for winning their household battles. I’m sure your families will treat you like royalty this week.

And finally, there is the dreaded scrum basement. Analyzing the mathematical algorithms and trends, the experts said it could not be done. But once Dianne flexed an impossible three-point finish we knew there was no way Fletcher could retain his grip on 22nd place. He responded with a zero and took home the booby prize for the season. Congratulations (?) to Dianne and Fletcher for their opposing accomplishments.

Thanks to everyone for getting involved and playing this season! We have discussed mixing up the format next season. If you have ideas, feel free to send them my way!

cheers!

Scrum Week 18 Picks

Here is the final round of picks for the 2024 season. Sorry I’m a little late. I had more wrangling to do this week than usual.

It looks like Mary has secured the season title, but we still have the micro-races to see the final order.

Go Steelers!

Scrum 2024 Week 17 Results

Happy new year! We’re getting near the close of the season. What a perfect time to be perfect! Shout out to the NINE players who scored fives this week. Wow! What a way to approach the finish.

Of those perfect weeks, four were at the top of the leaderboard. Unfortunately, Adam and Stephanie have fallen out of the race. With Mary’s perfect week, she’s locked in a portion of the 2024 crown. John has a mathematical chance to tie in the final week, but it’s not looking good.

While Mary rehearses her trophy photo poses, let’s move on to the final week of the season. Finding two interesting games with playoff implications was easy. Picking a third was touchy. Here are the week 18 list of games:

  • Bengals @ Steelers
  • Dolphins @ Jets
  • Vikings @ Lions

Get those picks in on time one last time!

Go Steelers!

Scrum 2024 Week 17 Picks

Hello everyone! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.

The games start this afternoon and here are the picks. Nearly half the pool picked a power pick from the DEN-CIN game this afternoon. The weekend could start with a bang! The majority  picked the GB-MIN game for power picks with a heavy emphasis on the Vikings.

In the top six, three people picked the same as Mary and cannot gain any ground. But Stephanie and Adam picked the opposite to keep it spicy.

We’ll see what happens!

Scrum 2024 Week 16 Results

Hi everyone. A couple of the games last week were tough to pick, but almost everyone agreed that the obvious easy pick was the Eagles. Until Jalen Hurts went down in the first quarter.. and then the pool blew up. After the dust settled, only one true genius prevailed with a perfect week. Congratulations to Paul for picking up five points in a week where most almost everyone had two or fewer.

With the Eagles going down last week, there were only two points on the line in the battle of first place. The top two players each picked different games to set up an interesting afternoon. John was sitting three points behind the leader hoping to pick up some ground. But Mary once again flexed and grabbed both to pull ahead by an impressive five point margin with two weeks remaining. Is it truly out of reach? John, Gerri and Stephanie are still mathematically in the hunt. Let’s see if they have a big swing left to make it a conversation next weekend.

One the flip side, we have the bottom feeders. Fletcher dropped another donut and Dianne picked up a point to cut the margin at last place to one point. It would appear to be a battle between these two, but Bill and Molly are still in the conversation. Yikes! Who will be the season turkey? Stay tuned to find out.

Finally, here are your week 17 games.

  • Broncos @ Bengals
  • Titans @ Jaguars
  • Packers @ Vikings

I avoided the Wednesday and Thursday games, but do have one Saturday pick in the list. So it’s extra important to get those picks in on time.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Scrum 2024 Week 15 Results

Posted on by • 0 comment

Hello scrumblers! Week 15 was one of our more interesting weeks, with a couple big road wins and a lot of variety in picks. We had two perfect scores this week – congratulations to Dan and myself. With Detroit suffering a rare home loss, we also had quite a few people who were hit hard this week.

After the dust cleared, Mary’s 4-point week gave her a little separation from her nearest competitors. She now has a three point lead with three weeks to go!

Also, in one week I somehow rose from 14th place to 8th. Dreams can come true! (as long you dream small)

When analyzing the standings, Fletcher pointed out that he has impressively dropped from a third place tie in week 7 to second-last in week 14. That’s a drop of 18 spots in 7 weeks. He held is brittle grip on 22nd place this week with his 1-point week and a commanding 2 point lead above last.

The story of Fletcher introduces a good thought experiment. Charlie Hergenrother was tied for third place with Fletcher in week 7. Could Charlie or any of us intentionally tanked our picks enough to plummet down the standings to end up where Fletcher stands today? If so, then it holds that Fletcher could pull a George Castanza and just pick the opposite of whatever he was thinking to surge ahead instead. If he had done this, he would have 25 more points during this past 8 week stretch would would put him square in second place and one point behind the leader. Somewhere in this 8 week nosedive is a consistently poor strategy than could be turned on its head to lead to a winning play. Hmmm.

Here are the week 16 games. It is slim pickings once again, so we have a division rivalry and two stinkers. Good luck!

  • PHI @ WASH
  • JAX @ LV
  • SF @ MIA

Picks are due Friday. No excuses!
